Fiji School of Medicine pilot e.learning products
During Nicola Foxlee's previous role as Dentistry Librarian at the University of
Queensland, where Learningfast e.learning products are available for student
use, she completed the TeachMe tutorials as part of her professional development program.
Upon taking on the role of Librarian for the Fiji School of Medicine, Nicola noticed the lack
of familiarity some staff and many new students had with using computers and the MS suite of
products. Nicola said the main reason for this was
"because many of our students come from small Pacific Island communities where owning a computer
is financially impossible or extremely rare (even if the technology is available)"
The Fiji School of Medicine has 3 resource areas where students
can access a total of 50 computers. Students are expected to use word processing for their
assignments and powerpoint for their presentations and for staff,
both word processing and powerpoint are an absolute must.
"Teaching the fundamentals of using a computer falls to the
IT and Library staff. A program, such as Learningfast's would be of tremendous assistance
to us, since it would enable the students to re-visit and so consolidate the skills taught in
the face to face classes" says Nicola.
The Fiji School of Medicine are now piloting the ICT Skills Benchmark and TeachMe products.
